Dr Larissa Souza Arantes (University of Minas Gerais, Brazylia) przedstawi referat pt. „Genomic Insights into the Evolutionary History and Conservation of Sloths in a Changing World”.

Abstrakt wystąpienia: Environmental and climatic changes have shaped the evolutionary trajectories of species, leaving genomic footprints that reveal how species respond to these shifts and their impacts on genetic health. I will explore how genomics can illuminate these evolutionary histories and guide effective conservation strategies. Focusing on sloths, a fascinating yet understudied group of mammals, I investigate how past and ongoing environmental changes, including recent deforestation in Brazilian forests, are shaping their genetic health and diversity. My research uncovers alarming signals of genetic erosion, reminding us that we are losing crucial evolutionary potential even before fully understanding which species inhabit these ecosystems. My goal is to demonstrate how evolutionary genomics can serve as a powerful ally in safeguarding biodiversity in a rapidly changing world.
